RASM PROJECT
(RIGHT TO ACCESS SUSTAINABLE MENSTRUATION)
(RIGHT TO ACCESS SUSTAINABLE MENSTRUATION)
Helping to educate and dispel the myths surrounding menstruation and enhance the lives and educational opportunities to young girls in schools.
WHAT IS THE RASM PROJECT ?
RASM (Right to Access Sustainable Menstruation) aims to increase the adoption of sustainable menstruation practices and products leading to enhance menstrual health, and empower menstruators to progress in all walks of their lives.
Menstrual hygiene is a crucial aspect of women’s reproductive health, yet it remains a neglected issue, particularly in rural India. Limited access to menstrual hygiene products, lack of awareness about proper hygiene practices, and societal taboos surrounding menstruation contribute to adverse physical, psychological, and social consequences for young girls.
KEY ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM
- Awareness and Education
Conduct workshops and interactive sessions to educate girls about menstrual health, hygiene practices, and debunking associated myths and taboos. - Educational Material
Develop culturally sensitive and age-appropriate educational materials in local languages to ensure effective communication. - Training on making cloth pads and their safe disposal
- Improve toilet and wash facilities and install incinerators
- Train local teachers and youth leaders at schools to fully engage with the girls
A vital part of the program to have a strong connection between girls and teachers

FOCUS
Chanchal: Youth Leader
Meet Chanchal an example of how to build the essential connection between the youth and adults when discussions are ongoing on such sensitive subjects. From high school she has been participating in social work and community engagement activities, particularly those related to the safety of girls and women. Chanchal responded to the call for Youth Leaders, and was even more enthusiastic to work once she realised that the project was to be executed in her own school.
A 4-day training process on becoming a youth leader which included capacity building, communication and presentation skills was successfully completed and as the staff and some of the younger students also knew Chanchal from her school days, the experience of working with the school was relatively smooth with no challenges.
In her own words
“Initially I was worried if I would meet the standards of the project, if I would be able to meet my own standards as well. I am very proud of the school I come from, and want to give back to the place I learnt so much from. There are lots of issues surrounding periods- girls don’t know what to do, they throw pads without covering them, and there is so much shame and embarrassment associated with it. I am glad that I can bring about change on this topic! Even in my own life I have started talking more openly with my mother about periods, and have shared pain-reducing tips with my younger sisters. Thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity!”
TESTIMONIAL
“We are so glad that our school was chosen for this project. There is a very high need for our girls to get information in topics of health and hygiene. So many come from economically poorer sections of society and their families are often not educated. We look forward to many such projects so that our girls can go on to achieve great things.”
